Lourdes Ramos Living a Better Quality of Life After Fat Stem Cell Transplant
By Marites A. Khanser

Five years ago, I published my first novel, titled The Mentor (Khanser, 2002). And what was striking about this novel was the futuristic human gene therapy that provided a cure for my main character who suffers from the debilitating disorder- Alzheimer's disease. Back then for me, stem cells therapy for degenerative disorders such as that of Alzheimer's was still in the realm of fiction. I predicted that five years later, it will become a reality. That was 2002, but today, I was very much surprised and amazed to learn that stem cells transplants, in particular, fat stem cells transplants, are here in the Philippines, and that there are now a number of patients who have undergone the procedure. Indeed, my prediction came true.

When I met Lourdes Barbero-Ramos, one of those who underwent fat stem cell transplants, and who is a very successful businesswoman, she struck me as one who radiates energy, despite the fact that she has been a diabetic patient since age 37 (she is now 56 years old but feels ten years younger). With her, I engaged in one of the most fascinating conversations I have had in my life about fat stem cells and what the transplant has brought into her personal life; and about how the technology has advanced so far in the search for a better quality of life for those in their 50s and 60s, through anti-aging technologies. I came to learn about a whole new paradigm about aging and what older men and women can still achieve if only they can have the energy, enthusiasm, a great sense of general well-being, good health and passion that are the characteristics of the young.

Lourdes is the Executive Vice-President and General Manager of GLOGOLD Financing Corporation which caters to the financing needs of the military and seafarers.

She has been suffering from diabetes since age 37, and she has embarked on a search for a better quality of life for herself through anti-aging technologies and therapies. She values a life that is lived to the fullest and although she is now in her middle age, there are still many big plans and dreams she wants to pursue and she does not believe at all in the idea of retirement.

In July of 2006, she heard about fat stem cell transplants that are being carried out by Dr. Florencio Lucero, a plastic surgeon of Asian Plastic Surgery Center. She got interested and got the plastic surgeon to explain to her the benefits as well as risks of undergoing such treatment for anti-aging. She was convinced of its efficacy after doing her own research and inquiries regarding fat stem cells transplants. She would have to shell out 25,000 US dollars for the operation.

"In as much as I would be paying that amount for liposuction and fat stem cell transplant, I decided I might as well also undergo body sculpture, and agreed to have plastic surgery done on me to enhance me physically." Lourdes says.

Thus, on January 11, 2007, Lourdes underwent fat stem cell transplant with Dr. Lucero as her plastic surgeon. According to Dr. Florencio Lucero, one of the leading plastic surgeons in the Philippines, and who is an expert in adipose-derived stem cells transplant, the process involves the following:

. .the harvesting of 100cc of dormant adult stem cells ( ASCs) from a patient's fat cells (Adipose tissue) through minimally invasive liposuction. The whole procedure is 4 hours long and is conducted in a sterile operating room in a hospital under local anesthesia. It takes 1 hour to harvest the ASCs, 1 hour to isolate them, 1 hour to incubate them in culture medium, and 1 hour to infuse them back into the patient intravenously.

Lourdes had to stay in the operating room more than four hours since she also underwent plastic surgery of some parts of her body for body sculpture. It usually takes four hours for the entire fat stem cell transplant procedure.

Eight months after the transplant, Lourdes has observed significant changes in her quality of life.

She says, "The first thing I noticed was that I am no longer very forgetful. I used to call my maid and then would forget what I wanted to tell her. But now, my mind has become sharp. What I appreciate more from the fat stem cell transplant was its effects on my memory and thinking. As a busy businesswoman, I need a sharp memory and critical thinking, and these days, I have a better memory and I can think fast."

In March, 2007, Lourdes went to the United States and she went into shopping spree and tours with her friends. She has this to say about that experience:

"During my trip to the U.S. last March, my friends noticed that I had boundless energy. We went on a shopping spree, and we visited many places, and my friends ended up very tired but to their amazement, I was still up and about and was far from being tired. In fact when I told them I was going for another round of shopping, they told me, "Lou, stem cells transplant works for you! " and I agreed."

The benefits of the "Actistem" fat stem cells anti-aging technology are many, according to Dr. Lucero. He said that the patient would generally feel a renewed vitality and energy that will enable her to accomplish a lot of activities although she may be in her late 40s or 60s. By letting nature take its course, the stem cells that were re-injected into the patient's body are expected to replace aging cells, or damaged ones, or the stem cells will become other new tissues like heart, liver and bone cells. Although the process will not be obvious to the patient, what she will feel will be a general sense of well-being, and she would look radiant, lively, and it will make her look ten years younger than her current age.

A bonus for Lourdes as a result of the fat stem cell transplant that she underwent was the reduction of insulin she has to inject on herself. Whereas before she would need as much as 40 units, now it's only 14 units. She considers this a blessing since it reduces her reliance on large doses of insulin injections and he has more energy to do the many activities that are lined up for her in a typical working day. It looks like fat stem cell transplants may also able to control diabetes and other degenerative disorders, an in fact that is a field that holds much promise (aside from anti-aging therapy) for health therapeutics and regenerative medicine.
